πŸ“š Classroom or OnlineπŸš— 10 Hours In-CarπŸ“ Moncton to Miramichi🏁 School Car for Road Test

RightLane Driver Training is one of the largest driving schools in New Brunswick. It began in Riverview in 1997 under the name GW Driver Education, and it now teaches in Riverview, Moncton, Saint John, Miramichi, Oromocto, Fredericton, Quispamsis and Sussex, plus a few towns in Nova Scotia. The school says it has taught more than 50,000 students.

What it sells is a full driver education package: a classroom part (in a room or online), 10 hours of one-on-one driving lessons, and the school’s car for your road test. The prices we found run from $695 to $781.74 before tax, depending on the town. Online reviews are mixed, and most complaints are about booking and scheduling rather than the teaching itself. This page covers what the course involves, what it costs once tax is added, and what to ask before you pay.

Do You Have to Take a Driving Course in New Brunswick?

No. The province does not require one, and you can learn with a friend or family member in the passenger seat. The reason people sign up anyway is time. Here is what the provincial graduated licence page says:

  • Without a course: you stay at Level 1 for at least 12 months before the road test, and you must be 17 to hold Level 2.
  • With a course from a licensed driving school: Level 1 can end after 8 months, and the minimum age for Level 2 drops to 16 years and 8 months.
  • Either way: the whole graduated program still takes at least 24 months before you get a full Class 5 licence.

RightLane’s website also says finishing the course may lower your insurance. It gives no figure. Call your insurer and ask what they would take off before you count on it.

How the Course Works

There are two ways to do the classroom part, and the in-car part is the same for both.

Classic Route

In-class option

Taught in person, on weekends, over two weekends. It runs about 25 hours in total, according to RightLane. Class dates are listed on each town’s registration page.

E-Academy (online)

23 online modules with quizzes that you finish at your own pace, followed by a required 5-hour in-person session with an instructor, which includes the written test. You pay in full before getting the online links.

In-car lessons

10 hours with a provincially certified instructor, one on one. Lessons run 1, 1.5 or 2 hours. They begin after you have your Level 1 licence and finish the online modules, and in New Brunswick, the in-person class too.

Practice between lessons

The school expects 3 to 5 hours of your own practice between lessons. The course is built to run about 8 months in New Brunswick, which lines up with the shorter Level 1 wait.

If you are not 16 yet, the classroom part can start as early as 60 days before your 16th birthday. The driving hours have to wait until you hold a licence.

What It Costs

RightLane’s FAQ says prices are set by location, so there is no single provincial price. These are the figures on its town pages. All are before tax.

Town Price (plus tax) What the page says
Riverview & Moncton $781.74 E-Academy online course, 5-hour in-person class and test, 10 hours in-car, school car for the road test
Saint John $781.74 Same package. The page lists the in-person and online options at the same price
Sussex and Quispamsis $781.74 Same package
Oromocto $695 Classroom and E-Academy listed at the same price
Miramichi $695 on the page we read 10 hours in-car spread over 8 months and a 1-hour road test. A second source showed $899, so ask for today’s price
Fredericton Not found We did not find a Fredericton price page

Add tax before you budget. New Brunswick HST is 15%, so $781.74 comes to about $899 at the till. That is our arithmetic, not a price the school advertises, so confirm the final amount.

Other money details we found:

  • Extra lessons: if 10 hours is not enough, the school says more hours are sold at a reduced rate. The rate is not published, so ask what it is.
  • Cancellations: the school does not publish a policy. One reviewer on a directory said students are charged $50 for cancelling a lesson with less than 24 hours’ notice. We could not confirm that, so ask.
  • Replacement certificate: $25, if your file is still on record. The school keeps student files for up to 3 years.
  • Payment: Visa, Mastercard or e-Transfer.

The Road Test

The school’s car is included for your road test, which saves you from having a registered, inspected and insured vehicle of your own on test day. The school says your instructor books the test based on availability, so ask when that happens and who confirms the date with you.

RightLane describes the test as a route of at least 3 km, often in fairly busy traffic. Examiners look at starting and stopping on level ground and hills, turns, backing up, following distance, signalling, parallel and angle parking, and how you react to signs and signals. Instructors can run practice tests that copy the format. Passing is not guaranteed, and extra discounted lessons are available if you feel unready.

What Students Say

The school’s own testimonials are all positive, but they are picked by the school and they are not dated. A directory listing shows a rating of 2.5 out of 5. The review count was 11 on one snapshot and 14 on another, which is a small sample, and we could not check it against Google directly. Taking both sources together, the pattern looks like this:

  • Instructors get the praise. Students describe them as patient and encouraging, and one nervous student said her instructor helped her build confidence. Several say they passed, some on the first try.
  • Scheduling gets the complaints. The most repeated complaint on the directory is that booking drives is slow and disorganized. One reviewer said finishing the in-car hours took two years.
  • Cancellation rules feel one-sided to some. One reviewer said the instructor can cancel without penalty while the student is charged.
  • Road test booking is unclear. The school’s FAQ says your instructor books it. One reviewer said they had to arrange it themselves, so confirm how it works for your town.
  • The online course suits busy people. One reviewer said it fit around a work schedule.

These are our summaries of public reviews, not endorsements, and individual experiences vary.

Questions to Ask Before You Pay

  • How long until the first lesson? After you finish the classroom part and have your Level 1 licence, how many weeks do students usually wait?
  • How often can I book? Can you get lessons every week, and who do you call when you need to move one?
  • What if the instructor cancels? Do you lose a slot, and is there a fee if you cancel, and from what notice period?
  • Who books my road test, and when? Ask for the answer in writing.
  • What is the total price with HST? And what does an extra hour cost?
  • What are the next class dates for my town? One third-party listing showed the online course as closed, so check the registration page.
  • Can I request a specific instructor or a French-speaking one? The website does not say which languages it teaches in.

Not the Same RightLane?

Two unrelated businesses use similar names: RightLane LLC, a traffic school in the United States, and Right Lane Trucking Academy. Neither is connected to the Riverview school we describe here. Check the phone number and location before you book.

What We Could and Couldn’t Verify

  • Public sources used: the school’s website (home page, Riverview and Moncton, Saint John, Miramichi, online learning, FAQ and testimonials pages), the provincial graduated licence page, a driving school directory and MapQuest.
  • Provincial approval: the school says its E-Academy is approved by the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety. We did not find an official list of approved schools to check this against.
  • Prices: taken from the school’s town pages, some of which carry a 2019 copyright notice. Miramichi showed two different figures.
  • Instructor numbers: the Riverview page says more than 20 instructors, and the home page says over a dozen, so we have not quoted a number.
  • Ratings: the 2.5 rating comes from one directory. Google, Facebook and Yelp ratings could not be confirmed.
  • Not published: cancellation policy, price of extra lessons, car make and model, and the languages instructors teach in.

Common Questions

Where is RightLane Driver Training?

Its head office is at 715 Coverdale Rd in Riverview, NB, per directory listings. It teaches in Riverview, Moncton, Saint John, Miramichi, Oromocto, Fredericton, Quispamsis and Sussex.

How much does the course cost?

$781.74 plus tax in Riverview, Moncton, Saint John, Sussex and Quispamsis, and $695 plus tax in Oromocto. With 15% HST, $781.74 is about $899. Confirm your town’s price before paying.

Do I need a course to get my licence in New Brunswick?

No. A course just shortens Level 1 from 12 months to 8, and lowers the Level 2 age from 17 to 16 years and 8 months.

How long does the course take?

The school says about 8 months in New Brunswick. Some students finish sooner, but it is not guaranteed.

Can I take the classroom part before I turn 16?

Yes, starting 60 days before your 16th birthday. You can only start the driving hours once you hold a licence.

Do I use my own car for the road test?

The school says its car is included. If you use your own, it needs to be registered, inspected and insured.

Who can practise with me at Level 1?

The province requires a front-seat driver with a Class 5 or better licence and at least 3 years of driving experience. You cannot carry other passengers at Level 1.

What if I lose my certificate?

The school says a replacement costs $25, if your file is still on record. It keeps files for up to 3 years.

Do they teach in French?

The website does not say. Ask the office which instructors and course dates are available in French.

Who This School Is For

RightLane is a solid pick if you want a long-running school that teaches in many New Brunswick towns, with one package price that includes the road test car. The online classroom option helps people who work or study during the week, and the instructors draw consistent praise.

It is a weaker fit if you need lessons booked quickly and predictably. Several reviewers say scheduling is the sore spot, so ask about wait times and the cancellation terms first, and get both in writing.
