West Coast Driver Training — Vancouver Island’s Commercial Driving School
Based in Duncan & Saanich · Class 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 + Air Brake · Chief Instructor Mark Anderson · Serves all of Vancouver Island
🚛 Class 3 (Truck)
💨 Air Brake courses
⚙️ Manual transmission
Every driving school we’ve reviewed in Victoria so far — Latz, Wise and Smart, Globex, Wallace, Victoria Driving School Inc, Exact, Mary’s, Fly — they all teach Class 5 and Class 7. Regular passenger vehicles. That’s the whole game.
West Coast Driver Training is completely different. Yes, they teach Class 5 and 7 too. But that’s not really the point. What makes them worth knowing about is what nobody else does: Class 2 (buses), Class 3 (trucks), Class 4 (small commercial, rideshare, small buses, and ambulances), and Air Brake endorsement courses. If you want to drive a BC Transit bus, a dump truck, a hotel shuttle, an ambulance, or you need to add the Air Brake endorsement to your existing license — this is the school.
The chief instructor and owner is Mark Anderson. Ex-BC Transit driver. Nearly two decades of transit driving in Victoria before he retired and got his instructor’s license at DriveWiseBC. Then taught for Young Drivers of Canada for a year. Then started West Coast Driver Training. Now he runs the whole operation from Duncan, with a second base in Saanich, and covers basically all of Vancouver Island.
What West Coast Actually Offers
Class 5 & Class 7
Regular passenger vehicle lessons. They do teach these — but there are cheaper options in Victoria for basic Class 5/7. West Coast makes more sense here if you want manual transmission training (very rare in BC now) or if you’re already booking a commercial class with them.
Commercial Classes (2, 3, 4)
Class 2 for large buses. Class 3 for large trucks. Class 4 Unrestricted for small buses (up to 25 passengers), taxis, and ambulances. Class 4 Restricted for rideshare (Uber, Lyft) and small commercial. Nobody else in Victoria/Vancouver Island really specializes in these.
Air Brake Courses
2-day intensive Air Brake course, $225 + GST ($236.25 total). They run these regularly in Nanaimo (also Duncan, Chemainus). Includes course manual. Then you write the 25-question multiple-choice test at ICBC to get your Code 15 Air Brake endorsement.
They do NOT currently teach Class 1 (heavy tractor-trailer combinations) even though Mark’s licensed for it. They also don’t teach Class 6 (motorcycles) — but they can refer you to qualified motorcycle instructors if you ask.
💡 Why Air Brakes matter (short version)
To drive most commercial vehicles in BC — buses, big trucks, tractor trailers — you legally need the Air Brake endorsement (Code 15) on your license. West Coast Driver Training runs the actual course, not just the theory. Air Brake Courses in Victoria are often booked out for weeks (or months) because so few schools teach them. West Coast usually has openings in Nanaimo and Duncan.
Who Is Mark Anderson? The Real Background
This isn’t marketing fluff. Mark’s actual career, in order:
- Got his BC Class 1 driver’s license at age 19 — the highest commercial class
- Worked driving tractor trailers, tour buses, and transit buses for years
- Spent nearly two decades at BC Transit driving public transit buses in Victoria
- Retired from BC Transit and got his Class 5/7 Driving Instructor license at DriveWiseBC in Victoria
- Taught for Young Drivers of Canada in Nanaimo, Duncan, and Cowichan Valley for about a year
- Upgraded his BC Driving Instructor license to include Class 1 MELT, Class 2, 3, 4, plus Air Brakes
- Started West Coast Driver Training & Education Inc
- Co-owns Coastal Pathways Driver Training Inc — a sister company also active on Vancouver Island
That’s a real commercial driving career, followed by a real driving instruction career. Not somebody who watched a few YouTube videos and got a Class 5 instructor cert. Mark’s driven the actual buses your Class 2 test is going to require you to drive.
They also have a part-time instructor named Sean Potorti who teaches on weekends. Real testimonial from a parent: “Absolutely loved Sean as a teacher for my daughter. Watched her greatly improved each time after each lesson.”
The Fleet — Actually Interesting
Most driving schools have one or two Corollas. That’s it. West Coast Driver Training has a real fleet built around what they teach:
- 2020 Toyota Prius Prime — used in Victoria (pictured at the ICBC office at 426 Dunedin Street). Hybrid, quiet, fuel efficient.
- 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid — used in Nanaimo. Another hybrid.
- 2016 VW Jetta 1.4L turbo, 5-speed manual transmission — added recently for students who specifically want manual transmission lessons. Almost impossible to find elsewhere in BC.
- Mack Vision day cab — for Air Brake courses. Because Air Brake requires actually seeing and touching the real components on a real truck.
The hybrid fleet is actually meaningful. Fuel-efficient teaching means the school can charge fair prices, and students who learn on hybrids adapt to any vehicle easily afterwards.
Service Area — Basically All of Vancouver Island
West Coast Driver Training covers a genuinely massive area:
Saanich
Duncan
Cowichan Valley
Ladysmith
Nanaimo
Salt Spring Island
Port Alberni (by arrangement)
Courtenay/Comox (by arrangement)
North Island (by arrangement)
Salt Spring Island clients get met at the BC Ferries terminal in Crofton — West Coast picks up at the ferry and drops back at the ferry when the lesson’s over. Longer lesson formats (2-hour, 2.5-hour, 3-hour) recommended for Salt Spring clients because of the ferry travel logistics.
In Victoria specifically, their students test at the ICBC Driver Licensing office at 426 Dunedin Street — that’s the commercial testing location in Vic West. Different from the McKenzie office where regular Class 5/7 tests happen.
What Real Students Say
All reviews below are real testimonials published on West Coast Driver Training’s website with actual first names and dates. Multiple sources.
“Since I live in Nanaimo, I am not familiar with the roads in Duncan. Also, the speed limits in city of Duncan are too complicated for me to remember. Therefore, I decided to take the road test in Nanaimo, using the bus at my work, and I passed! After the test, my examiner told me that my pre-trip inspection was ‘efficient’ and I did not miss any point! Taking the driving lessons from Mark gave me confident to drive a bus safely. I appreciate for his knowledge and patience. I would recommend him to anyone.”

What the reviews actually tell you
Reading the pile, the pattern is different from other Victoria driving schools we’ve covered. Reviews are shorter, more matter-of-fact, and focus on practical outcomes — passing bus tests, passing Air Brake, passing Class 1 learners. Less about “confidence” and “anxiety” (which dominates single-instructor Class 5/7 schools) and more about “I needed this qualification and I got it.” That’s the commercial-driving-student mindset.
By the Numbers
West Coast Driver Training is ICBC-licensed under the BC Motor Vehicle Act. Their standard lesson is 90 minutes, but longer options (2-hour, 2.5-hour, 3-hour) are available especially for clients coming in from Salt Spring Island or other travel-heavy locations. Booking is through their online form, phone/text at (250) 732-8093, or email to Office Manager Erica Winter at erica@westcoastdrivertraining.com.
How West Coast Compares to Other Victoria Options
Honestly? It’s an unfair comparison in one direction — WCDT is the only Victoria-area school that really teaches commercial classes. So for Class 2, 3, 4, or Air Brake, there isn’t much to compare against. But if you’re deciding on Class 5/7, here’s the picture:
Fly Driving School (Lunar Court)
Fly also does Class 4 for rideshare, but doesn’t do Class 2 or 3, and doesn’t do the actual Air Brake course. If you specifically need Class 4 Restricted for Uber and nothing else, Fly is probably faster. For anything commercial-heavy, WCDT is the answer.
Joan Wallace Driving School (Cook Street)
Wallace is the 50-year institution for Class 5/7 in Victoria. WCDT is the specialist for commercial. Different niches. Reasonably possible to use both if you’re a family with mixed needs (teen going for Class 7 at Wallace, parent going for Class 4 at WCDT).
Wise and Smart, Latz, Mary’s, Exact
All Class 5/7 specialists with strong reviews. If you’re a beginner going for your first BC license, one of these will be a better fit than WCDT — they specialize in first-time drivers, WCDT specializes in commercial. Different worlds.
Straight up: if you’re going for Class 5 or 7 as a first-time driver, most of the other schools we’ve reviewed are better fits. WCDT is where you go when you need a commercial class or Air Brake endorsement.
Common Questions
What’s the difference between Class 4 Unrestricted and Class 4 Restricted?
Class 4 Restricted lets you drive taxis, limos, small buses (up to 10 passengers plus driver), and rideshare vehicles (Uber, Lyft). Class 4 Unrestricted extends that to include larger passenger vehicles up to 25 passengers (small buses, some ambulances) — but not full-size transit buses (that’s Class 2). Most rideshare drivers only need Class 4 Restricted.
Do I need Air Brakes for Class 2 or Class 3?
If your test vehicle has air brakes, yes. Most large buses and heavy trucks in BC have air brakes, so most people going for Class 2 or Class 3 do end up needing the Air Brake endorsement. WCDT teaches the Air Brake course separately — it’s a 2-day course, then you write the ICBC written test to get your Code 15 endorsement.
Where’s the West Coast Driver Training office in Victoria?
The main office is in Duncan at 2896 Drinkwater Rd. In Victoria specifically, they operate from Saanich but don’t have a public storefront address — like most driving schools that serve wide areas, it’s pickup-based. Contact through the phone or email to arrange your Victoria pickup location.
Where’s the Victoria road test for Class 2/3/4?
Commercial road tests in Victoria happen at the ICBC Driver Licensing office at 426 Dunedin Street in Vic West. That’s the commercial testing location. Regular Class 5/7 tests happen at the McKenzie office. Different locations for different classes.
Can I really book manual transmission lessons?
Yes — WCDT specifically acquired a 2016 VW Jetta 5-speed manual for this purpose. Contact Office Manager Erica at 250-709-3910 to arrange dates and times. This is genuinely rare in BC now — most driving schools have gone entirely automatic. If you specifically want to learn stick shift on Vancouver Island, this is the option.
Do they teach Class 1 (heavy tractor-trailer)?
Mark is personally licensed to teach Class 1 MELT, but WCDT is not currently offering Class 1 instruction. If you need Class 1, you’ll want to look at dedicated commercial trucking schools in Nanaimo or Vancouver. WCDT can teach you the Air Brake portion (which you’ll need for Class 1) but not the actual Class 1 tractor-trailer training.
How do I book?
Three options: online booking form at westcoastdrivertraining.com, phone/text at (250) 732-8093, or email Office Manager Erica Winter at erica@westcoastdrivertraining.com. For manual transmission specifically, text Erica at 250-709-3910. For Air Brake courses, use the online registration form.
Who West Coast Driver Training Is For
Straight answer: this school is for the commercial driving side of things. Bus drivers, truck drivers, rideshare drivers who need Class 4, anyone needing an Air Brake endorsement, and manual transmission learners. Everyone else — first-time Class 5/7 drivers, new immigrants learning to drive, teens going for their N — is going to be better served by one of the other Victoria driving schools we’ve reviewed.
Mark Anderson’s credentials are the real deal. Ex-BC Transit driver, 20 years driving experience before he became an instructor, taught for Young Drivers of Canada, then built his own school and a sister company. Air Brake courses regularly sell out in Victoria; WCDT usually has openings in Nanaimo and Duncan.
The best move if you’re commercial-bound: call (250) 732-8093, tell them what class you’re going for, and ask about scheduling. If Air Brake is on your list, get on their next Nanaimo or Duncan course — those book up fast.
