Ontario’s G1/G2/G Graduated Licensing System

Ontario uses a graduated licensing system with three stages. New drivers start by passing the G1 written knowledge test, which allows driving with a fully licensed G driver. After completing the MTO-approved BDE course and holding a G1 for at least 8 months, drivers may take the G2 road test. After holding a G2 for at least 12 months, drivers can take the full G road test, which includes highway driving. Completing G1G2’s MTO-approved Beginner Driver Education course makes graduates eligible for a potential insurance discount from their insurer. It also allows the G2 road test to be taken after 8 months of holding a G1 licence, rather than waiting the standard 12 months. The BDE course consists of 20 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of one-on-one in-car training with a licensed driving instructor.
