Assiniboine College MPI Drivers’ Education Brandon — Fees, Course Options & the 5-Hour Retraining Course
Brandon, MB · Run with Manitoba Public Insurance · Three course options · Fees from $55.65 (GST included)
Assiniboine College isn’t a typical driving school. Working with Manitoba Public Insurance, it runs an MPI Drivers’ Education program from its permanent site in Brandon, and it appears on MPI’s official list of Class 5 driving schools for the city. It also runs a rotating site in Dauphin. The fees are published, low and include GST.
There are three separate options: a classroom course with in-car training, an in-car-only course, and a stand-alone 5-hour course for drivers who have to complete MPI’s retraining requirement after failing road tests.
Published Fees
All three fees include GST, according to the college. The math: the in-car-only course works out to $32.97 per hour, and the mandatory 5-hour course to $37.59 per hour. Both are well below the $50 to $75 hourly lesson prices at the Brandon private schools we’ve profiled. The in-class option, at $55.65 for 16 classroom hours and 4 in-car hours, is priced far lower than any private school option we found.
What “mandatory 5-hour training” means. Since November 2024, MPI has required 5 hours of instruction from an MPI-permitted school after three failed road tests before you can book a fourth. The college lists a 5-hour course for exactly this requirement. To qualify for the in-car and 5-hour courses, you need a valid 5L learner’s licence or a Class 5 Stage A licence.
The Three Course Options
In-Class Course
16 hours in class, run over one weekend, plus 4 hours in-car. Covers theory, knowledge test preparation, road test preparation and parallel parking. Fee: $55.65.
In-Car Only
5 hours of in-car training in the college’s equipped vehicles for people who already know the theory. Fee: $164.85.
Mandatory 5-Hour Training
The 5 hours MPI requires after failed road tests. Fee: $187.95.
Confidence & Parking
The college says the program includes road test preparation, parallel parking instruction and confidence building.
How Registration and Scheduling Work
- Apply online. The college requires an online application at least one week before your start date.
- Bring ID. Government-issued ID is required. Applicants must be 16 or older.
- Start dates. In-car training starts monthly, on the 1st and 15th in Brandon. The next in-class weekend listed when we checked was October 3–4, 2026.
- Locations. Brandon is permanent. Dauphin rotates, so check the current schedule.
- Questions. Call 204.725.8725, or toll-free 800.862.6307 ext. 6002.
⚠️ Age wording differs. The current program page says applicants must be 16 or older. A 2024 news release about the program’s expansion described it as for adults 18 and older. Use the college’s current page, and confirm your age eligibility before applying.
Compared With a Private School
- Cost: far lower per hour, and the classroom course is very cheap.
- Flexibility: less. You apply online, start on set dates, and the classroom part runs over a weekend, whereas private schools take bookings by phone or online on your schedule.
- Pickup: the college doesn’t mention pickup, which several private schools include.
- Road test car: we didn’t find a road test car rental listed, so ask.
- Reviews: as a college program it has no school-style review pages we could find, so we quote none.
By the Numbers
Common Questions
Is Assiniboine College on MPI’s permitted list?
Yes. It appears on MPI’s official Find A Driving School list for Brandon as Assiniboine College Class 5 Adult Driver Training, with the phone number 204-725-8725.
Do the fees include tax?
The college says the fees include GST.
Is this the course I need after three failed tests?
The 5-hour mandatory training course is the one that matches MPI’s requirement. Confirm with the college and MPI that you’ll receive the verification form you need before booking a fourth test.
Do I need a learner’s licence?
For the in-car and mandatory 5-hour courses, yes: a valid 5L learner’s licence or a Class 5 Stage A licence. Everyone needs government-issued ID.
Will I practise my exact road test route?
No school in Manitoba should promise that. MPI’s rules say instructors can’t teach the routes used in actual road tests, so expect practice on the skills and road types you’ll meet instead.
Who This Program Is For
Assiniboine’s program is best for Brandon learners who want the lowest published price and can fit its start dates. It is a strong choice for anyone who needs the mandatory 5 hours after failed tests, since $187.95 is less than what a private school would charge for the same hours at its regular rate.
If you need flexible booking, pickup, or a road test car, look at a private school such as Shevyboy’s or Driving Academy of Manitoba.
